DOMESTIC STUDENTS

Bachelor of Philosophy/Master of Research

Commonwealth supported places are available for domestic students enrolled in the Bachelor of Philosophy/Master of Research (BPhil/MRes) in their first year. Commonwealth supported students are liable for a student contribution towards the units they study and may be eligible to apply for HECS-HELP. Year 1 domestic students will be required to pay Student Activity Fees. Domestic students continuing into the second year are supported by the Commonwealth through the Research Training Program (RTP) and do not pay fees.

The Bachelor of Philosophy is an approved course for the purposes of student income support. Students may be eligible for student income support payments such as Youth Allowance or Austudy, provided all other qualifications are met. Please check with Centrelink directly for further information.

Doctor of Philosophy/Master of Philosophy

Domestic candidates enrolled in either the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program are funded by the Government under the Research Training Program (RTP).

Students are entitled to a maximum of three years' full-time equivalent study and a maximum of two years' full-time equivalent study if undertaking a Research Masters.

Candidates with incomplete research degrees will have their prior candidature period deducted from their full RTP entitlement when they enrol.

Student amenities fee

As you will be enrolled as undertaking an internal unit of study you will be required to pay a Student Amenities Fee. Please refer to the following link for further information. Student Amenities Fee

If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia (Humanitarian Visa Holder), you may wish to lodge a Student Amenities Help Form. Follow the steps outlined above for HECS-HELP but choose the SA-HELP option at Step 3.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The tuition fees for international students at Macquarie University are set on a per credit point basis and are revised each year. This means that there is a fee for each credit point in which you are enrolled. The University reviews the per credit point fees each year and may increase them in the following year. Students are subject to other fees, charges, and conditions for each semester in which they enrol and are advised to check the current fees, charges, and conditions with the University before enrolling at any time.

International students must pay a 1Commencement Fee. It is a portion of your tuition fee that you need to pay when you accept an offer to study at Macquarie University. The Commencement Fee does not represent the full cost of your unit enrolment. You will need to check eStudent once you enrol. This Commencement Fee is taken off your first session tuition fees (ie. it is not in addition to your tuition fees) - you will then need to pay the balance for the session. Subsequent sessions are paid at the beginning of each half year, in January and in July.

Payment due dates can be found at the Office of Financial Services. Information about how to pay fees is available here.

1Recipients of tuition scholarships may be exempt from paying a commencement fee, and these details will be specified in your letter of offer.

All programs for International students are full fee-paying programs. Fees are subject to indexation each calendar year as from 1 January. The fees below apply from 1 January 2023. Students who do not pay their fees by the due date may run the risk of having their enrolment cancelled.

International HDR students who will require an Australian Student Visa are required to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover upon acceptance. Information on costs are available here under the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) section.

"Out of Time" Fee (applicable to MRes Yr2, MPhil and PhD only)

From 01 January 2021 international candidates will not be charged the pro-rata full course tuition fees for the period of time they consume beyond their EWS date. Instead, candidates who apply for and are approved for an extension of EWS date in accordance with the HDR Variations to Candidature Policy will be charged a flat rate of AUD $2000 for a 3 month extension as a write up fee (the International Out of Time fee or “iOOT” fee). Candidates can apply for a cumulative maximum of 1 EFTSL (PhD/MPhil) or 0.5 EFTSL (MRes Y2) in accordance with the Policy, and each extension application of 3 months will incur a flat rate $2000 charge.

If you do not pay your iOOT fee by the payment due date, late payment penalties may also apply.

Operational details – MRes Y2 candidates

  • Candidates will not be liable for full tuition fees for more than one year (full time equivalent) of the MRes Y2 program.
  • Candidates may apply for up to 2 extensions of EWS date for 3 months at a time. Should a candidate only apply for 6 weeks, 3 months will automatically be granted. Of course, you may still submit after 6 weeks.
  • The first extension of candidature for MRes Y2s for 3 months up to the end of January (for S1) or end of July (S2) will not incur a charge of full tuition fees or a write up fee.
  • $2000 ‘International Out of Time or iOOT’ fee will apply for the second approved application for extension of EWS date.
  • When a candidate has an approved extension, marks are not deducted should they submit on or before their new EWS date.
  • Candidates will be expected to apply for an extension of EWS date before the expiry of their candidature.

Operational details – MPhil/PhD candidates

  • Candidates will not be charged full tuition fees for the period beyond their standard period of candidature. The standard period of candidature is defined in the HDR Rules.
  • Candidates may apply for up to 4 extensions of EWS date for 3 months at a time. Should a candidate only apply for 6 weeks, 3 months will automatically be granted. Of course, you may still submit after 6 weeks.
  • $2000 ‘International Out of Time or iOOT’ fee will apply for each approved application for extension of candidature.
  • Where candidates are MQ funded scholarship holders, the first approved application for extension may include an extension of stipend, where the candidate applies and is approved for an extension under the MQ COVID-19 Extension Scholarship Scheme. In these circumstances the iOOT will not apply.
  • Candidates will be expected to apply for an extension of EWS date before the expiry of their candidature.

International Out of Time Fee - FAQs

Can I apply for 6 months extension?

PhD and MPhil can apply for a 6-month extension in accordance with the HDR Variations to Candidature Policy, however you will be charged for two 3 month periods (2 x iOOT = $4000).

I have a scholarship; will it cover my iOOT?

Scholarships for international candidates funded by MQ do not cover the iOOT fee. If you have an externally funded scholarship you will need to check with your provider or sponsor.

My EWS date is in session 1 2021, and earlier this year I had fees showing in my eStudent account which have now disappeared. What has happened to these fees?

As part of the roll out of the International Out of Time fee, MQ will not be charging international candidates full tuition fees for their period of enrolment beyond their standard time limit. If you apply for an extension of EWS date you will be charged the iOOT fee of $2000 for 3 months, and this will show in your eStudent account.

I don’t need three months; can I apply for less than 3 month extension and pay a lesser fee?

No, if you apply for an extension of EWS date you will be granted 3 months, for a flat rate of $2000. This is not pro-rata.

Can I submit before the end of my approved extension period?

Yes, you can submit before the end of your approved extension. If you submit your thesis within one month of your original EWS date after applying for a 3-month extension, the fee will be reversed and you will not have to pay.

When is the fee due?

The fee due date will be displayed in your eStudent account and will be due one month from your original EWS date.

Will I have to pay the International Out of Time fee for my first extension if I have received a COVID-19 Extension Scholarship (not applicable to MRes)?

No, candidates who are eligible and who are approved for the COVID-19 Extension Scholarship Scheme will be granted up to 3 months stipend and tuition scholarship, and for this first extension will not be charged the iOOT. Subsequent extension will be subject to the $2000 flat rate fee for each 3 month extension of EWS date.

I haven’t submitted an extension of EWS date, will I be charged the fee?

You will only be charged the iOOT fee of $2000 when you apply for an extension of EWS date. If you do not submit your thesis and you have not obtained an EWS date extension your candidature may be ceased in accordance with the HDR Variations to candidature policy.

I withdrew from my program without applying for an extension and now I want to re-enrol to submit my thesis, will I be charged?

If you withdrew on or after your original course EWS date, yes, when you apply to re-enrol to submit your thesis you will be charged the iOOT $2000 fee and be given 3 months in which to finalise and submit your thesis. If you submit in the first month the fee will be reversed, and you will not have to pay.

I am a cotutelle candidate, will I have to pay?

Yes, cotutelle and Joint PhD candidates who apply for an extension will be subject to the $2000 iOOT on application for a 3 month extension of EWS date.

Will the fee apply when I am completing my thesis corrections?

No, if you are completing thesis corrections following an examination outcome of Award with Corrections you will not be charged tuition fees and you will not be required to pay the international Out of Time fee.

I have been asked to revise and resubmit my thesis, what fees will I have to pay?

You will not be required to pay full tuition fees for the period of enrolment for revision and resubmission of the thesis. However you will be charged the International Out of Time fee for each 3 months of enrolment (4 x iOOT $2000).
